Individual Accomplishments and Strengths

Though they share a passion for swimming, the Walsh sisters have distinct strengths and have achieved individual success in different events:

  • Alex Walsh: Excels in the 200-meter individual medley (IM) and 200-meter backstroke. She broke the junior national record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 2016 and won three gold medals at the 2019 Pan American Games. Alex is known for her thoughtful and level-headed approach to competition. Her impressive 2:09.01 in the 200 IM at the 2019 US Open ranks her among the fastest performers in history.

  • Gretchen Walsh: Specializes in sprint freestyle events, particularly the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle. She won six gold medals at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships, setting lifetime best times in both the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle. Sibling Rivalry and Support

Like any siblings, Alex and Gretchen experience moments of rivalry, but their bond remains strong. They train together, push each other in practice, and provide unwavering support, especially during the inevitable highs and lows of competitive swimming. Their mother, Glynis Walsh, believes their contrasting personalities complement each other, contributing to their success. While Alex’s early success motivated Gretchen, Gretchen’s strong work ethic later inspired Alex.

A Shared Olympic Dream

The ultimate goal for both Alex and Gretchen is to compete in the Olympics. They are aware of the historical significance of siblings qualifying for the US Olympic Swim Team, a feat accomplished by the Kirk sisters in 2004 and the Keller sisters in the same year. They acknowledge the possibility that only one of them might qualify, but their primary hope is to share the experience together.
