SAN DIEGO (Sept. 5, 2024) — In a landmark announcement that has reverberated throughout the soccer world, Alex Morgan, the celebrated San Diego Wave FC forward and U.S. Women’s National Team legend, has confirmed her retirement from professional soccer. Widely regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats, Morgan will officially conclude her remarkable career this Sunday, September 8th, at Snapdragon Stadium, proudly representing San Diego Wave one last time.
“I’m retiring. I have so much clarity about this decision,” Alex Morgan stated in her retirement video, addressing fans directly. “It has been a long time coming, and this decision wasn’t easy, but at the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that I would play soccer. The impact we have on the next generation is irreversible, and I am proud of the hand I had in making that happen, pushing the game forward, and leaving it in a place that I am so happy and proud of.”
At 35 years old, Morgan’s retirement marks the end of an extraordinary 13 and a half year journey at the pinnacle of professional soccer. Her career spanned across top-tier leagues in both the United States and Europe, solidifying her status as an icon for the United States Women’s National Team. Accumulating over 200 goals and 88 assists in an astounding 337 appearances, Morgan’s contributions to the sport are undeniable. She will retire from San Diego Wave as the club’s all-time leader in goals (28) and assists (11). On the international stage, Morgan’s legacy is further cemented as she ranks among the top 10 in USWNT history for goals, assists, and multi-goal performances.
