What Happened to Alex McPherson? Auburn Kicker’s Injury Update

Alex McPherson, Auburn’s star kicker, was sidelined this summer due to an intestinal injury. This concerning health issue caused him to lose weight and miss valuable preseason practice time. Special teams coordinator Tanner Burns recently provided an update on McPherson’s recovery and his return to the field.

McPherson’s Road to Recovery

Burns detailed McPherson’s progress, stating that it was a “slow process” to get him back to his current condition. While the injury initially led to weight loss, a significant concern for the coaching staff, McPherson is now back over 140 pounds. More importantly, he’s “back to being himself,” according to Burns. This signifies a return not only to physical health but also to his characteristic positive attitude and personality, which had been noticeably subdued during his recovery.

Burns noted that McPherson always tries to maintain a positive demeanor, but his true personality is shining through again now that he’s regaining his health. The kicker’s recovery included a period where he was unable to participate in practice but remained a consistent presence on the sidelines, supporting his teammates throughout fall camp.

McGough Steps Up in McPherson’s Absence

Freshman Towns McGough seized the opportunity presented by McPherson’s absence. He impressed during the spring game, making all eight of his field goal attempts, including a game-winning 58-yarder. Burns praised McGough’s performance in fall camp, highlighting his perfect record from within 40 yards. He went on to commend both kickers, calling them the “two most talented” he’s coached in his career.

While McGough initially struggled with consistency after the spring game, head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed that he showed significant improvement during fall camp, performing well in critical red zone situations. Freeze emphasized the importance of the entire kicking operation – snap, hold, and protection – and noted improvements in these areas as well.

A Strong Kicking Duo for Auburn

With McPherson’s return and McGough’s emergence, Auburn boasts a formidable kicking unit heading into the season. McPherson’s proven track record, including a perfect 13-for-13 on field goals last season, combined with McGough’s impressive talent and rapid development, provides the Tigers with two reliable options. While the starting role remains to be determined, Auburn appears well-equipped in the kicking department. The competition between these two talented kickers will likely push both to perform at their best.
